The Epilepsies and Seizures: Hope Through Research

Bertha C. Ekeh, Udeme E. Background and Aim. Epilepsy remains a stigmatized disease especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. Lack of information and illiteracy has been blamed as the cause of the stigmatization. This stigmatization stems from the fact that the traditional African belief views epilepsy as a spiritual disease. We studied the knowledge, attitude, and perception towards epilepsy amongst medical students comparing the knowledge of the clinical students with that of the basic medical preclinical students. The participants were medical students in University of Uyo. We administered questionnaires which explored the knowledge of etiology perceived and medically proven. We studied the beliefs in infectivity of epilepsy, treatment together with their attitudes, and perception to persons with epilepsy.

Epilepsy is a disorder of the brain that triggers recurrent seizures. A person is diagnosed with epilepsy when they have had two or more seizures that are not caused by another medical condition such as a high fever or low blood sugar. Zayan was thirteen years old when he had his first seizure in his school computer lab in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Following the incident, Zayan took a long break from school to seek medical care. He was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy, which is caused by an unknown factor that may be genetic.

Epilepsy can be caused by different conditions, including stroke, brain tumor, brain infection, or traumatic brain injury. As my friendship with Zayan grew, I became passionate about understanding how epilepsy impacted his daily life. One morning I witnessed a seizure suddenly take over his body and it was one of the most frightening moments we shared together. That experience made learning seizure first aid a priority for me so that I could take care of Zayan if and when he had another seizure.

If you know someone living with epilepsy, you might have to care for them during or after a seizure. The goal of seizure first aid is to keep the person safe until the seizure stops on its own. Stay with the person until the seizure ends and he or she is fully awake.

Going on a first date can be nerve-wracking under the best of circumstances; epilepsy just adds another twist. One question people often worry about is how soon they should tell their date that they have epilepsy. Being able to ask questions and share feelings on any topic, including epilepsy, will only make a relationship stronger. Although it may seem tempting to tell the other person over the phone, in an email or by text, instead of in person, any serious conversation like this is probably best done face-to-face.

The more comfortable you are with the other person, the better the conversation will go.

If you look after someone with epilepsy, you may be their ‘carer’. A carer is someone who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of a health condition, disability or frailty, and who would not be able to manage without this help. All the care they give is unpaid. The term ‘carer’ does not mean someone who is in paid employment as a care worker. Every year, more than two million people become carers for the first time.

Some people are carers for a short period of time, others for many years.
