I had students actively engaged in evaluating exponential expressions not the most thrilling standard for over forty-five minutes! I was blown away! The activity itself makes students interact with different classmates but for a short enough time so that it never gets too awkward and they never have enough time to start goofing off. Each time students switch partners, they work on a new math problem, so accountability is high to learn the skill. When the activity begins, students receive the same problem that their partners across from them receive. Students get practice explaining that same problem over and over, and each time their confidence grows a little higher. Yes, even if the content is exponential expressions! This gives students a little more motivation to ask their partner to help them understand a problem—because in a minute they will have to switch partners and solve a similar problem. When I create the problems for a Speed Dating activity, I typically make the first couple problems the easiest and increase the difficulty with each problem. This way, when I assign starting seats, I make sure my struggling students are toward the beginning of the row and my higher students are toward the end.

I am going to ask students to pick up a card as they enter class. Students will become an expert on the problem that they choose, so I want students to be able to pick a problem that they feel is accessible. Them, students have 10 minutes to solve their problem and become an expert on how to explain the solution process to someone else. During this period, they can ask anyone for help. After ten minutes they will need to be the expert on the problem. The answers are copied on the back of the card so that students can check their work.
I may review with students for a moment to make sure they recall how to find the area and perimeter of a rectangle. I know I should expect students to know this by now.

At the start of a speed dating session, students are given a topic or question to discuss. Each student sits facing another student. Students typically remain in their partner-groups for about minutes before the instructor, who must keep time, notifies them to move on to their next partner. Once students rotate to their new partners, the timer is reset and students again discuss their topic or question, this time with a new discussion partner.
The session proceeds in this manner, with each student thus getting the opportunity to interact with multiple other students in a series of brief one-on-one discussions Murphy, Depending on the goals of the session, the instructor may prepare just a few broad questions for students to discuss Murphy, Rather than preparing the answer sheets themselves, instructors can assign their preparation as a homework or in-class activity, as creating the answer sheets serves as another opportunity for students to learn the material Danczak, Another pre-session preparatory activity is to provide students with time to write on the topic to organize their ideas before they begin to converse with their peers Murphy, In other variations, students may be required to take a stand on a topic, or they may be asked to incorporate points made by other students into their position as the session goes along Murphy, Conversely, speed dating sessions prevent dominant students from monopolizing class discussion time Murphy, Because each conversation is quick, speed dating provides a way to cover a lot of information potentially about disparate topics in a relatively short period of time Lashbrook,

We worked in pairs across from each other to solve a problem involving building a model of an expression using exponents, and another with a simplification problem. They now did the question in front of them, with the help of the expert. Then the other side shifted one to their right, and tried the next question, helped by the expert who had just completed that question the round before.

We are working on solving systems of equations and started out by solving via graphing. This way they truly understand what they are finding when solving a system. Not necessarily a hard task but it is something they need practice on solving. Basically the desks were lined up with two desks per pod. I had 12 groups. Look at them working so hard! Love them all! I made 12 sets of different equations and numbered each set.
I then handed out a set to each group being mindful of the level of difficulty when I initially handed them out. When they were done I checked their answers and helped clear up any mistakes.

I do it a bit differently than it has been done in math classes previously. They each work on individual whiteboards, but talk together while working. I walk around and answer questions while they work. After we finish each problem, one person at each table rotates to the next table. The same people move all period. I usually have them do a quick rock, paper, scissors, to determine who has to move.

What a fun way to practice skills! I love how you have students solve the problem twice once by themselves and once with you and then analyze their errors. I have found that it is SO difficult to get students to analyze their mistakes. My students just want the right answer and they want to find it quickly. I am trying to help them change their mindset. I will try this with my fifth graders.
